چکیده

We report on impurity transport modeling using the DIVIMP code which is able to qualitatively reproduce the poloidal variation of non-recycling impurity penetration factor (PFNR) found in CMod experiments: a lower PFNR is computed at the inboard (3.6 %) and divertor target locations (0.7 %) than at the outboard (11 %). By artificially increasing the modeled inner SOL plasma flow to correspond to measured values, a better quantitative agreement between modeled and measured PFs is achieved. We have also roughly reproduced the observed penetration factor for recycling impurities both in time dependence and magnitude. The model has shown that under attached conditions, the majority of recycling impurity ions flow into the confined plasma through the outboard side separatrix. For detached conditions the impurity influx across the separatrix is more concentrated near the divertor. _____________________________________________ PACS: 52.55.F, 52.65.K, 52.25.V JNM keywords: Impurities (I0100), Plasma-Materials Interaction (P0500) PSI-16 keywords: Alcator C-Mod, DIVIMP, Recycling, Impurity screening *Corresponding author address: 175 Albany St. NW17-103, Cambridge, MA 02139, USA *Corresponding author E-mail: [email protected] *Corresponding Author Phone/FAX: 1-617-253-8636, 1-617-253-0627 *Corresponding Author: Bruce Lipschultz

PSFC / JA - 99 - 15 Plasma Rotation During Ohmic H - modes in Alcator C - Mod Tokamak

Core plasma rotation is observed to change from the counter-to co-current direction during the transition from low (L) to high (H) confinement mode, in Alcator C-Mod plasmas that are heated purely ohmically. The changes of the toroidal velocities deduced from impurity Doppler measurements and magnetic perturbations associated with "sawteeth" are quantitatively similar. The magnitude of the chan...

The Measurement of the Intrinsic Impurities of Molybdenum and Carbon in the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak Plasma using Low Resolution Spectroscopy

The intrinsic impurity content of molybdenum and carbon was measured in the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak using low resolution, multilayer mirror (MLM) spectroscopy (∆λ ~ 1-10 Å). Molybdenum was the dominant high-Z impurity and originated from the molybdenum armor tiles covering all of C-Mod's plasma facing surfaces (including the inner column, the poloidal divertor plates, and the ICRF limiter). Despi...

PFC / JA - 96 - 23 Particle Drift Effects on the Alcator C - Mod Divertor

The sign of the toroidal magnetic field has a major effect on the divertor in Alcator C-Mod, determining whether the higher recycling is on the inboard or outboard side and leading to inboard/outboard temperature and density differences up to a factor of ten. A recently published paper [1] reported in detail on these observations, which are an indication of the importance of plasma particle dri...

PFC / JA - 96 - 17 Screening of Recycling and Non - Recycling Impurities in the Alcator C - Mod Tokamak

The behavior of argon and nitrogen, injected into single null diverted ohmic discharges, has been compared. The screening of the divertor and scrape-off layer plasma is studied by comparing the number of impurity atoms in the core with the number injected by a calibrated gas puff. The effect of the poloidal position of injection on screening has been investigated. The core nitrogen density is d...

PSFC / JA - 05 - 46 Advances in measurement and modeling of the high - confinement - mode pedestal on the Alcator C - Mod tokamak

Edge transport barrier (ETB) studies on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak [Phys. Plasmas 1, 1511, (1994)] investigate pedestal scalings and radial transport of plasma and neutrals. Pedestal profiles show trends with plasma operational parameters such as total current IP . A ballooning-like I2 P dependence is seen in the pressure gradient, despite calculated stability to ideal ballooning modes. A simila...
